Historic Burroughs Home reopens in Fort Myers after renovations

FORT MYERS, Fla. —

The historic Burroughs Home in Fort Myers has reopened its doors to visitors after undergoing a $2.3 million renovation to repair damage caused by three hurricanes over the past two years.

Marc Collins from the Uncommon Friends Foundation expressed his excitement.

"This is our redemption story. It feels so good. It finally feels like the home that was presented to this city. We could not be more happy," Collins said.

Melissa Coon from Burroughs Home and Gardens shared the positive reactions they have received.

"Absolutely thrilled. We get countless emails and calls every day," Coon said. "People who just congratulate us. Of course, we always say we're so grateful. But the big deal is to take the city. You know, they made an expensive decision on our behalf and on behalf of the citizens because, as we've said numerous times, this is one of the crown jewels of our city."

The mansion was shut down last fall due to years of wear and hurricane damage. Fort Myers city leaders knew history would be lost forever without repairs.

Ann Sullivan, a snowbird from Illinois, described her experience at the Burroughs Home.

"I was in my previous life, I live in one of these homes. My husband told me I was probably the maid there. I could just envision myself with the long dresses walking through," Sullivan said.

The Georgian Revival mansion, originally ordered from a Sears and Roebuck catalog and delivered in crates by railroad, offers tours that take visitors back to the early 1900s.

Collins emphasized the importance of preserving history.

"Honestly, history is back. History is alive in Fort Myers. There is not a lot of it, so it's something that needs to be treasured," Collins said. "We are just so honored as the Uncommon Friends to be the caretakers and partners with the city. Really, they went above and beyond. And so it allows us to maintain and support our history preservation here."

The Burroughs Home now serves as a backdrop for weddings, charity galas, and community celebrations, ensuring its rich history will be enjoyed for decades to come.
