North Fort Myers man accused of animal cruelty, dragging dog behind truck

LEE COUNTY, Fla.—Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno announced the arrest of a man accused of animal abuse in North Fort Myers.

On Friday, Marceno held a news conference regarding the arrest of Johnny Davis, 69, who allegedly tethered his pet dog, named Ruthie, to the back of his Ford F-150 truck, dragging it throughout the area.

According to Marceno, a witness account recorded Davis’ vehicle driving on the intersection of Bartholomew Drive and Laurel Lane. The witness then confronted Davis before reporting the incident to law enforcement.

Deputies located Davis’ vehicle and conducted a traffic stop and inspection of the truck. Marceno says that blood, believed to be Ruthie’s, was found on the interior and exterior of the truck.

A search warrant was issued for Davis’ home, where they located the injured Australian Cattle dog. Ruthie was found with severe injuries, extensive road rash, and flesh damage.

The dog was then transported to a nearby animal hospital for treatment. Marceno updated the dog's condition, saying that she is a fighter and is expected to survive.

Davis was arrested and charged with aggravated animal cruelty.

He remains in the Lee County Jail.
