Scaling New Heights: Fort Myers’ Newest Hangout Spot

FORT MYERS, Fla. — There’s a new way to hang out in Fort Myers, and it requires a harness and a whole lot of grip strength.

Central Rock Gym is officially open, bringing indoor rock climbing to Southwest Florida and giving locals a fresh option for fitness, fun and community. The gym features multiple climbing areas, including bouldering walls where climbers use only their strength and technique without a harness, and taller rope routes that range from beginner-friendly to seriously challenging. Staff members or skilled climbers belay people, and automatic systems allow people to climb solo as well.

General manager Ben DeSalle said the gym builds on an existing climbing community in the region. "It's also creating something new for people looking to escape the Florida heat and stay active indoors," he said.

Climbing gyms across the country have grown rapidly in recent years because they combine strength training, cardio and problem-solving in one workout. DeSalle said rock climbing improves grip strength, balance, flexibility and core stability, while also helping with stress relief and mental focus.

At Central Rock Gym, climbers can also use tension and kilter boards, which let users design their own routes or try ones created by climbers around the world through connected apps. Another feature that keeps people coming back is how often the walls change, "Routes are reset weekly by professional route setters, meaning climbers face new challenges all the time," said DeSalle "The route setters rely on creativity and experience when designing problems, making every week feel like a new gym."

For some members, climbing fills a gap traditional sports never could. Gym Member Savannah struggled to find a workout her and her brother enjoyed before discovering rock climbing. "At first I was really scared to come down the wall, but I did it once and realized I wasn't going to get hurt and now I do it all the time."

Beyond climbing, the gym offers a full fitness area, yoga classes, ping pong tables and lounge space, turning it into more than just a workout spot. It also creates opportunities for families.

During the summer, Central Rock Gym plans to host camps for kids, giving them a safe environment to build confidence, coordination and teamwork. Central Rock Gym's goal is to make climbing approachable for everyone, whether it is their first time on a wall or their hundredth.

The gym’s grand opening celebration is set for March 21 and includes a partnership with the brewery next door, Resurgence Brewery. DeSalle said anyone feeling nervous about trying rock climbing should not worry, "The Fort Myers climbing community is always excited to welcome new climbers and that taking the first step is what matters most."
