Beloved Naples Zoo matriarch African lioness passes away at age 20

NAPLES, Fla.—The Naples Zoo has announced the unfortunate passing of its matriarch African lioness, Shani, who was humanely euthanized after displaying a noticeable decline in health due to her advanced age.  

Shani passed at the age of 20, which, according to the Naples Zoo, far exceeded the typical lifespan of a wild lioness, which is around 10 to 15 years. 

“Our commitment to animal welfare remains our guiding principle at every stage of an animal's life,” said Jack Mulvena, Naples Zoo, President and CEO. “While saying goodbye is heartbreaking, this decision was made out of respect for Shani’s quality of life.” 

In their statement, Naples Zoo said that Shani was under constant supervision by her keepers and was receiving specialized geriatric care. 

In 2013, Shani was transferred from Ohio to Naples Zoo after being genetically matched through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan. She was selected to mate with their male lion, Masamba, who passed in 2025 at age 16. 

In 2019, the pair welcomed three cubs to the zoo. Since then, Shani has become an iconic staple at the Naples Zoo. 

In conclusion, Naples Zoo said Shani’s legacy will live through her three sons, all currently residing at the Brevard Zoo in Melbourne, Florida.
