Minnesota Twins host Puerto Rico at Hammond Stadium in lively exhibition

LEE COUNTY, Fla. (WINK) — Fans packed Hammond Stadium as the Minnesota Twins hosted Team Puerto Rico for an exhibition game before the World Baseball Classic. The event was more than just a game; it was a celebration of culture and pride for many fans.

Puerto Rico native Robert Ortega shared his excitement about the event.

"It's a heritage thing that it's a very emotional thing for us. Puerto Ricans support our teams," said Ortega.

Ortega described the atmosphere when Puerto Rican players took the field.

"We scream. We do everything we play. It's a party for us. It's a party. It's a real party," he said.

Fans traveled from across Florida to attend the game.

"We drove all the way from Jacksonville to come see the guys play. Because, you know, I'm we're deep into the Puerto Rico team," said a member of a Puerto Rico fan group.

They expressed how special it was to see the roster together before the World Baseball Classic.

"We get to see all your best players in one team play. You know, it's just an amazing feeling that touches your heart," they said.

Raul Gonzalez emphasized the enduring pride Puerto Ricans have for their team.

"There's nothing like it, just the past three World Baseball classics. Puerto Rico is always represented. You know, you come to our island, you're gonna have a party. So we're gonna bring the party to you guys," said Gonzalez.

The younger generation is also carrying this spirit.

"It was like everybody, everybody knew each other, everybody, there was no hatred. It was all love," said Arianna DeJesus.

Team Puerto Rico will head home tonight to prepare for the World Baseball Classic, where they will represent their island on the international stage.
