Southwest Florida drought; neighbors recognize dry conditions

PUNTA GORDA, Fla - Charlotte County is experiencing its driest conditions in 25 years, with residents noticing significant changes in their environment. A countywide burn ban and watering restrictions are in place to mitigate fire risks and conserve water.

The WINK Weather Authority reported that since December 1, Punta Gorda has received only about 3 inches of rain, which is just 44% of the normal amount for this time of year. Due to the drought, residents are limited to watering their lawns only one day a week, based on the last number of their address, and only during the early morning hours from 12:01 a.m. to 8 a.m.

Frank Fusco, a Punta Gorda resident, shared his observations.

"What really got me this time was the immense cold. It was very cold. It has frozen a couple of different times, so everybody's grass is still brown. Usually, it's already popped back by this time. So what I notice is a great change in the vegetation," said Fusco.

Mason Whitesides, another resident, expressed his concern about the dry conditions.

"I drive down my road, and it's pretty brown, and usually it's pretty green, lots of flowers. But, you know, I don't see a lot of that right now," said Whitesides.

The watering restrictions are expected to remain in effect through July 1, 2026, as officials continue to monitor the situation. The burn ban prohibits all outdoor open burning, including yard waste and recreational fires, to reduce wildfire risk.
