Zulu Project in Collier County aims to end homelessness for veterans by 2026

COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. — A local nonprofit is taking a significant step forward in addressing veteran homelessness in Collier County. Warrior Homes of Collier celebrated progress on its latest housing project, the Zulu Project, which aims to end veteran homelessness in the area by the end of 2026.

Warrior Homes of Collier believes the Zulu Project could be the key to solving the issue of veteran homelessness in the county.

"They're still out there, and we're still working hard to try to get them to see that there is a better future," said Jannis Alonso, an Air Force veteran who works with Warrior Homes of Collier.

Alonso emphasized the organization's commitment to helping every veteran, regardless of their branch or housing situation.

"We're all linked into that one mindset of helping every veteran,” said Alonso. “For me, it's the comradery. Doesn't matter what branch you are."

Donors gathered for a luncheon on Thursday to celebrate the progress made on the Zulu Project, Warrior Homes of Collier's latest initiative. The project will eventually provide housing for 20 veterans in 10 apartments on Gulfstream Drive.

Dale Mullin, CEO and founder of Warrior Homes of Collier, highlighted the importance of the project for senior veterans on fixed incomes.

"A lot of particularly senior veterans that are on fixed incomes are becoming homeless because of that. So, we're happy that we got a solution," said Mullin.

Alonso also pointed out that these homes are more than just a place to stay.

"Veterans are constantly coming in and out of the military," said Alonso. "It's not just their house, that's it. No, it's a lot more than just that. It's like medical it's, you know, their financials that they have any help whatsoever. We help sustain them as well."

While the building recently received a new roof, it is still under renovation. It is scheduled to open in the fall, with the goal of leaving no veteran on the streets.
