FORT MYERS, Fla. (WINK) — More than 50 writers gathered in Fort Myers for the 27th annual Southwest Florida Reading Festival, a beloved event drawing thousands of book lovers each year.
Books were stacked high, and downtown Fort Myers transformed into a celebration of stories.
"Just coming out and supporting the readers who are the reason why we're here at all is really, really fun to get to meet them," said Rachel Gillig, an author at the festival.
The Southwest Florida Reading Festival has been bringing authors and readers together for more than two decades.
"It celebrates reading, and it helps us instill that love of literacy in young kids who come. But we know reading is for everyone, all ages, and so you know, it's so impactful. You know, reading is at the core of all the things you do in your life," said Melissa Baker, event organizer.
The free event, hosted by the Lee County Library System, featured author talks, book signings, and crafts, all designed to make reading fun for families.
"I get, like, emails from parents and teachers and librarians saying, you know, my son, my daughter, my student hated to read, you know, and then they, they picked up your books, and now all they want to do is read your books. And it's so exciting," said Dan Gutman, an author.
For many authors, events like this are a chance to meet the readers who inspire them.
"When you come out here, you get to meet the people that you're actually writing for. And the community is so important. I mean, and we always say readers are the best people. They really are. So to come out like this feels like reuniting with all of our friends," said Kristen Harmel, an author.
From children just discovering their first favorite book to adults who never stopped reading, the festival reminded everyone that stories can connect people.
"Stories are magic. They're a portal to another world," said Patti Callahan Henry, an author.
The festival celebrates the magic of reading, connecting authors and readers in a shared love for stories.
