Manatee rescued from Orange River after cold-stress concerns | What you can do

LEE COUNTY, Fla. —

A male manatee was rescued from the Orange River in Fort Myers on March 2 after responders found the animal showing signs of cold stress, a potentially life-threatening condition linked to prolonged exposure to chilly water.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Fish and Wildlife Research Institute, the manatee was located in the river with the help of the Lee County Sheriff's Office and rescued by the FWC Marine Mammal Rescue team.

Manatees exposed to water temperatures below 68 degrees for extended periods can develop cold stress, which can make them sick and, in severe cases, threaten their survival.

ZooTampa partners helped with the animal’s transport to SeaWorld, where the manatee is expected to receive rehabilitation, the institute said.

In February, more than 25 dead manatees were removed from Lee County waters, including Manatee Park, possibly due to cold stress during multiple cold fronts that dropped air temperatures into the low 30s.

People who see a sick, injured or cold-stressed manatee are asked to report it to FWC’s Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-3922 so trained responders can assist.
