Fort Myers proposes medians on McGregor Boulevard to curb passing, mixed reaction from drivers

FORT MYERS, Fla. —

Fort Myers is proposing the installation of two medians on McGregor Boulevard to prevent drivers from passing each other, sparking mixed reactions from residents.

Terry Slaton, a Fort Myers resident, expressed concerns about aggressive drivers, saying, "Aggressive drivers will still be aggressive, and they'll probably do things that are even more stupid."

The city aims to install the medians to address these concerns, but Slaton is skeptical of the plan, stating, "It makes it harder to get out on the road and merging with traffic if you have these stupid things in the middle of the road."

Nicole Setzer, the Fort Myers Public Works City Engineer, believes the medians will be beneficial.

"I mean, I think these medians will be an improvement along McGregor," Setzer said.

She discussed the proposal at a city council workshop on Monday, highlighting two areas for the medians: near the Rachel at the Well statue and on Sandra Drive, with an estimated cost of $95,000.

Setzer explained that the medians would prevent drivers from pulling out and passing, similar to existing islands further down McGregor.

Once a contractor is involved, public works will present the plan to the city council for approval. The medians are designed not to impact home driveways.
