According to the Collier County Sheriff's Office arrest report, deputies conducted a traffic stop on a car on US-41 at Palm Drive after observing the car driving carelessly and having an unregistered tag.
Deputies spoke with the driver, identified as Christian Basquez, who was unable to provide vehicle registration. Basquez told deputies he had purchased the vehicle on Dec. 6, 2025, and had not yet had it registered.
The passenger in the back seat, Cornelious Martin, 21, opened the door. Deputies told Martin to stay inside the vehicle, the arrest report said.
Martin then opened the door again and jumped out of the back of the vehicle. He ran across the traffic lanes of US-41 before being tackled by deputies, the report said.
Martin resisted the deputies' attempts to restrain him, the report said, and fought against being handcuffed by bracing and tensing.
According to the report, one of the deputies, worried about both Martin and the deputies' safety due to being in the traffic lanes of US-41, struck Martin in the face in an attempt to gain compliance, but Martin continued resisting.
Deputies were eventually able to place hand restraints on Martin and escort him out of the traffic lanes.
Martin and the deputies sustained injuries and were cleared by emergency medical services.
Martin was arrested and faces a charge of resisting an officer without violence. Martin was also on probation at the time of his arrest, the report states.
The driver of the vehicle, Basquez, was charged with having an unregistered motor vehicle and issued a notice-to-appear.
