Fort Myers is set to host its first downtown Pride event on June 13, marking a significant shift in visibility for the LGBTQ+ community in the city.
Fort Myers is preparing for its first downtown Pride event on June 13 at the Sidney and Berne Davis Art Center, marking a historic moment for the city as Pride SWFL moves its celebration to the heart of downtown.
Mel Smith, a Fort Myers historian, said, "I think there is a population excited about it. There is enough room here to host it."
Joanne Miller, another historian, expressed her happiness about the event, saying, "This is 2026. I mean, it is what it is. I'm happy to see it."
Smith acknowledged that not everyone may be supportive, stating, "They have the right to protest, but they don't have the right to take away your happiness."
For years, Pride-SWFL has held its event at the Alliance for the Arts, away from the public eye. Arlene Goldberg, founder of Visuality, emphasized the significance of the move, saying, "Moving from the park to here is a big deal for the community."
Goldberg's group is organizing the event, and she noted, "I think more people can be exposed to who we are and we're regular people just like they are."
Community members have reacted positively to the news. Suzanne from Fort Myers said, "I don't think it should even be a discussion."
Sheila added, "I think it's awesome. Why not?"
Debbie shared her perspective, saying, "Everybody is human, and God loves everyone."
Businesses in the area are also supportive. Greg Longenhagen from the Florida Repertory Theatre said, "I think it's fantastic. Any business or foot traffic is good for downtown."
Organizers have not disclosed many details about the event, but it is known that it will take place along First Street, including the inside and rooftop bar of the art center.
