Port Charlotte man accused of animal cruelty after dog dies of heat stroke

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. —

A Charlotte County man was arrested on Wednesday after being accused of animal cruelty.

According to a letter from Charlotte County Animal Control to the State Attorney's Office, a dog was left outside all day at a home in Port Charlotte and died of heat stroke in May 2025.

The dog, an 11-year-old brindle Shepherd mix named Neffy, was tethered outside for a long period of time with no access to shelter or water. When animal control arrived, Neffy was dead from heat stroke.

Neffy's owner, Jeffrey Felton, 28, was arrested on Wednesday, with charges being filed by the State Attorney's Office.

Felton faces charges of confinement/abandonment of animals and animal cruelty.
