SOUTHWEST FLORIDA, (WINK) — The ongoing war in Iran has raised concerns about potential threats to the United States.
In the U.S., the threat of terrorist attacks remains, especially with the military action in the Middle East.
The most likely threat could come from individuals inspired by events in Iran, known as lone wolves. Another potential threat is from sleeper cells, which are dormant groups of covert agents living normal lives until activated.
Dan Morrison, a retired FBI agent who investigated such activities, shared insights.
"We've had members of some of these groups come forward and advise of what they were doing in the sense of wanting to cooperate with the United States government versus participate in these sleeper cells," said Morrison. "So we have a pretty good intelligence of some of them that have existed and kind of standing by, always looking for those signs that might indicate that they're out there and ready to put things into motion."
There have been unconfirmed reports that Iran used a radio broadcast to activate sleeper cells globally. Although the U.S. government initially issued an alert, it was later withdrawn. However, the possibility still lingers in people's minds.
These attacks could target any of the 12 countries previously attacked by Iran or any vulnerable location worldwide. Despite this, many security officials have rated the risk as low. Law enforcement continues to urge vigilance, reminding people, "If you see something, say something."
