After reports of milky-green water, dead fish and crabs, and a horrible smell in Buccaneer Lagoon, the Town of Fort Myers Beach is responding.
According to the town, officials are aware of the unusual number of dead fish in the lagoon and are taking immediate action to investigate.
Environmental authorities have been notified, and experts are beginning to assess the situation and submit water samples to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Florida Gulf Coast University.
"The health and safety of our community and its natural environment are our top priorities," the town said. "Out of an abundance of caution, we ask that residents avoid contact with the lagoon until further notice."
A Gulf Coast News reporter at the lagoon saw multiple dead fish and crabs floating in the water and noted the foul smell.
