FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla. (WINK) — The Town of Fort Myers Beach says an unusual number of dead fish have been found in Buccaneer Lagoon, and officials are now working to determine the cause.
In a message to residents on the town’s Facebook Page, the town said crews recently observed the fish and immediately notified environmental authorities.
Officials say they are working with experts to assess the situation, collect samples, and investigate what may be behind the die-off.
This comes after another recent concern about marine life in Southwest Florida, when dozens of dead manatees were reported near Manatee Park earlier this month. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission confirmed 25 manatees died from cold stress.
Out of caution, the town is asking residents to avoid contact with the lagoon until further notice. Officials say protecting the community and the surrounding environment is a top priority, and updates will be shared as more information becomes available.
