Heavy rain floods streets across Charlotte County

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. —

Heavy rainstorms in Punta Gorda transformed streets into rivers along East Marion Avenue Sunday night.

"There's water all over the streets. It was flowing water down the streets. The cars were making waves behind. Slowing traffic up pretty good," said Collin Brooks, who drove through the storm in Punta Gorda.

Walking through the streets was equally challenging, as heavy rain created pools of water across Charlotte County, from sidewalks in Punta Gorda to backyards in Deep Creek. Video footage from Ann Street showed drainage systems overwhelmed by the water, with stormwater gurgling up through a manhole cover.

High water also swamped the parking lot at Bar 17, although customers appeared unfazed by the flooding, dancing in the rain.

Despite the recent rain, all Gulf Coast counties remain under a burn ban, a reminder to residents as the ground begins to dry out.
