Details emerge on Yucca Pens Preserve reported shooting, crash that left two injured

CAPE CORAL, Fla. (WINK)—An incident report outlines details from a Cape Coral officer's perspective after responding to shots being fired Sunday morning.

Officers responded to reports of shots fired at the Yucca Pens Preserve and surrounding areas by Burnt Store Road at around 2 a.m. Sunday. While handling that incident, a crash with injuries was also reported in the area.

According to police, one officer responded to the shots-fired call. As that officer responded, a dark sedan with heavy damage approached.

According to the report, two people got out of the car, injured and covered in blood. Upon interview with the officer, the two people said they were attacked, adding that guns were pointed directly at them.

The two people further said that multiple people pulled out weapons and began shooting at them. The report does not say that the two individuals had gunshot wounds.

The report then says that while assisting with these two people, he was needed at a separate vehicle crash where someone was run over by a car. One person was severely injured in the crash and transported to a hospital via Lee Flight.

An ATV was found and later removed from the canal, but the Cape Coral Police Department told WINK News it was not involved in the crash that resulted in injuries. Neighbors say the large scene woke them up in the middle of the night. 

"We woke up around 2:30 in the morning, my wife and I, and we heard the cameras go off," said John Wood, a Cape Coral resident. "We saw this guy, the big, bright light. He's in dark clothes. And we're like, what's going on? I don't know what's happening."

Wood said police brought out aerial support. 

"I guess there are a lot of things happening. There are helicopters going. We had, you know, you had drones flying, you know, it was just chaos out here. It was crazy. Thought you were in a war zone for a second," said John Wood.

Police say the investigation is ongoing and that further updates will be released as more information is gathered.
