Gas prices top $4 a gallon in Southwest Florida amid US conflict with Iran

FORT MYERS, Fla. —

Gas prices across Florida's Gulf Coast have risen above $4 a gallon for the first time since 2022, following the U.S. conflict with Iran, causing financial strain for many residents and businesses.

The average gas price in the region is creating pain at the pump, with larger vehicles costing up to $115 to fill up. Experts say prices could eventually reach $5 a gallon. Gas pumps are reading $101 and even $150 as people spend money on the commodity they need.

Haley Amburgey, a resident, said, "Well, with the wars and everything, yes, but I've got to get gas anyway. So I got to do what I got to do."

For many, the rising costs are becoming a serious concern. Edwin Parpbes expressed his frustration, saying, "For my pocket it's a lot of money, you know, I can't get by with that." He added, "Thank God I don't work anymore."

Dr. Amir Neto from the FGCU Regional Economic Research Institute explained, "As prices continue to go up in the commodity market, that will drive the gasoline price up." He noted that the length and scope of the war will influence future price increases.

Despite the president releasing 172 million barrels of the country's reserve oil, Dr. Neto said, "It is a small amount on the grand scheme of things. But it's something that addresses an immediate gap." He warned that the price of everything will increase, stating, "The airlines are starting to update their prices for the start of summer traveling."

Ryan Carter from Scotlynn Trucking highlighted the impact on businesses, saying, "It does put a tighter squeeze on my business and does hurt our margin." He explained, "It affects pricing for all of us in that every good that we buy at stores has fuel factored in per case and per pallet."

With diesel fuel nearing $5.30 a gallon, the trucking industry is warning that the price of all goods will rise. Unfortunately, prices like this are commonplace, and with the summer travel season set to begin, there is no relief in sight.
