Naples considers new regulations for e-bikes and micromobility tours

NAPLES, Fla. —

Naples city officials are prioritizing safety for cyclists by discussing potential regulations for e-bikes and micromobility tours, which they say are causing traffic and safety issues.

During a city council workshop, the possibility of more regulations for e-bikes was expressed, with council members considering a future city with fewer e-bikers on the roadways.

Dean Bowman, a Naples resident who has been cycling for nearly 60 years, said, "I think the more people that are out enjoying the great outdoors we have here in South Florida, the better." He noted the change in transportation modes, saying, "When I started cycling, there was no such thing as an e-bike."

Marshall Evans from Bike Route highlighted the potential dangers, stating, "It could be dangerous. That's why Naples made it. So you can only go 12 miles an hour on the pathway, and you can't use the throttle either." He added, "What we tell people, if people try to ride on the sidewalk, you tell them not to because motorists aren't looking for bicycles on the sidewalk. They're looking for pedestrians, right? It's called a sidewalk, not a side ride. And as far as being on the bike lane, I just wish there were more bike lanes here. There be a lot more safe."

Soon, e-bikes may no longer be allowed on sidewalks, bike lanes, or parks.

The council also discussed micromobility tours that have caused traffic concerns and safety issues in the city.

The city is still determining the direction for these ordinances.
