Search underway for fugitive after incident at Charlotte County gas station

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. —

Charlotte County deputies are asking for the public's help in the search for a fugitive following an incident that happened at the Pilot gas station on Jones Loop Road.

According to the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office, shots were fired into a vehicle at the gas station on March 8. CCSO said no one was injured, and Travis Merrell, 33, was identified as the shooter.

Deputies and the United States Marshals Task Force are looking for Merrell, and he's considered to be armed and dangerous.

Seth Marlowe, a Cape Coral driver at that gas station, said, "You can't hide from cameras these days. Yeah, I mean, they're everywhere."

People at the Pilot gas station in Punta Gorda are vigilant, with Marlowe adding, "These days, you just kind of watch out where you're at."

Trish Routte from SWFL Crimestoppers emphasized the danger, saying, "If you've seen him, do not approach him again, again considered armed and dangerous. He will use that gun. He proved that as a fact a couple of weeks ago."

SWFL Crimestoppers and Charlotte County deputies have listed Merrell as one of the county's most wanted individuals.

"He's got a real lengthy criminal history. He spent 12 years in prison, for various charges, and has an extensive criminal history out of DeSoto County," Routte said.

Court documents reveal Merrell has been arrested about a dozen times since 2010 for charges including grand theft auto, hit and run, possession of meth and marijuana, and driving without a license.

With Merrell still at large and potentially armed, Marlowe advised, "Take cover. Seriously!"

Drivers are hopeful for a swift resolution, with Marlowe expressing, "Hopefully they get the consequences they deserve when they. If they get caught, you know."
