Sunseeker Resort expansion could boost Charlotte County economy

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. (WINK)—The Sunseeker Resort is moving forward with plans to add 100,000 square feet of meeting and event space, a move supporters say could boost tourism and the local economy.

Experts say the expansion could be a game-changer for the resort. The new space will include a 38,000-square-foot grand ballroom, outdoor terrace, event lawn and a connecting sky bridge.

"The other nine months out of the year, demand for individual accommodations is not very strong, and therefore they need to be able to create demand by booking meetings, conferences and events into their resort," said Michael Collins, a professor at FGCU's School of Resort & Hospitality Management.

Collins said the expansion could help the resort fill rooms year-round, especially during slower months when tourism typically drops off.

"They'll be able to fill their resort with virtually any conference and completely sell out the resort, keep those guests in-house to generate lots of revenue," Collins said.

The economic benefits could extend beyond just tourism. Collins said the expansion could drive tax revenues that help the entire community.

Bob McCurry, manager of Salty Tarpon, said the expansion could mean more visitors and more money flowing into surrounding businesses.

"I think it's a great thing. You know, that's what we live for, especially in season when everybody's down here," McCurry said.

Not everyone is on board. Some residents question whether the resort is a good fit for Charlotte County.

"What's the reason would you bring your kid here? There's no beach. Would you go golfing here? There's no golf course. I don't understand it," said Stephen Valdes, a Punta Gorda resident.

Experts say that if the expansion proceeds as planned, it could help turn the resort into a year-round destination rather than just a seasonal one. Resort management said that while the groundbreaking still has to be finalized, they anticipate it happening late spring or early summer, with the expansion being complete by late next year.
