A sheriff's office in Florida's Panhandle is mourning the loss of one of its own.
The Calhoun County Sheriff's Office announced Sunday morning that Deputy Steven Bruner died shortly after his shift ended after suffering a medical emergency.
During his shift, the sheriff's office said Deputy Bruner worked tirelessly Saturday, assisting with evacuations from the Baker Road wildfire.
According to the Florida Forest Service, as of Saturday night, the Baker Road wildfire had burned at least 500 acres and was 40% contained in the northwest corner of the county.
“To know Bruner was to love him. He was the kind of person who would step up to help anyone without a second thought. Selfless, dedicated, and truly one of a kind,” the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post on Sunday morning. "Our agency, along with many others, will deeply feel his loss. Rest easy, Deputy Bruner. We have it from here.”
Law enforcement agencies on the Treasure Coast sent their condolences to the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office and the family of Deputy Bruner.
