It is time for a change in the kitchen, and one shop tucked inside Fishermen’s Village is helping make that happen.
Inside The Spice & Tea Exchange, located inside Fisherman's Village in Punta Gorda, walls are lined with hundreds of spices sourced from around the world, offering something for every dish and every level of cook. From everyday staples to bold, global flavors, the store is designed to inspire creativity at home.
For those looking to upgrade a weeknight meal, blends like the Backwoods Hickory Rub bring a smoky, slightly sweet flavor to chicken with ingredients like hickory, sea salt, garlic and turbinado sugar. Seafood lovers can reach for the shop’s blackening seasoning, while barbecue fans often gravitate toward chimichurri blends and butcher-style rubs.
Manager Angela Smolka said the passion behind the counter is what makes the store stand out.
“Everyone here is enthusiastic about cooking and teas,” Smolka said. “They’re all so educated about everything here. The spices, of course, are the freshest you can get.”
That freshness comes from the store’s process. Many of the custom blends are mixed in-house, allowing staff to control quality and create unique flavor combinations customers cannot find in traditional grocery stores. Beyond spices, the shop also carries specialty salts, peppers and infused sugars to round out any pantry.
Production specialist Julz McMahon said the store plays a unique role in the Punta Gorda community, where gatherings and home-cooked meals are a year-round tradition.
“We make all the spice blends here in-house. It’s high quality,” McMahon said. “It’s important the store is here because it’s summer all year long. There’s a lot of hosting parties and cooking for family and friends.”
The shop also leans into fun and unexpected flavors. One of its most talked-about blends, Florida Sunshine, combines sea salt, green peppercorn, ginger, rose petals and citrus zest. Another standout is a dill pickle seasoning, often used for chicken salad, dips or even burgers.
Beyond spices, tea lovers will find just as much to explore. The store offers a wide selection ranging from classic caffeinated teas to herbal, caffeine-free options. Customers can browse blends like Peach on the Beach or Golden Monkey, or explore functional teas marketed for relaxation and wellness.
To make things even easier, the shop sells pre-portioned recipe kits that include all the spices needed for popular dishes like “marry me chicken” or buffalo chicken dip, taking the guesswork out of cooking.
Customers can also sample products in-store or stop by the tea bar, which features rotating drinks and creative options like fruit-infused iced teas and matcha-based beverages.
Whether it is experimenting with new flavors or simply finding a better way to season a favorite dish, this Punta Gorda spot is giving locals a fresh reason to step back into the kitchen.
