Pre-trial hearing set for woman accused of killing 96-year-old man in wrong-way crash

A pre-trial hearing is set for the woman accused of killing a 96-year-old man in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 75. 

The hearing for Genise Taylor is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Monday, but it may not be a major turning point in the case.

On Friday, Taylor's public defender filed paperwork waiving her arraignment and allowing her to skip court and enter a plea of not guilty through her attorney. Another step forward in the process, but the hearing could focus more on procedural issues like timelines and next steps.

Arthur Gilbert died after Taylor, accused of being drunk, crashed into him head-on in the southbound lanes of I-75 on March 16. Florida Highway Patrol says the 24-year-old caused the deadly crash. She's now charged with DUI manslaughter.

Taylor was rolled into court in a wheelchair for her first court appearance last week.

Gilbert's wife says he was driving home after dropping her off at the airport. She told WINK News the nearly 20 years they spent married were magical.

His wife says she's not following every development in the case, saying it's just too painful. Right now, she's focused on putting the pieces of her life back together.

What was meant to be a birthday celebration next month will now be a celebration of Gilbert's life.
