Woman accused of causing fatal wrong-way crash on I-75 to appear in court

COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. (WINK)—The woman accused of causing a fatal wrong way crash is set to appear in court.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, Genise Gardenia Taylor, 24, crashed head-on into two cars on Interstate 75 near the Immokalee Road exit Wednesday morning, killing a 96-year-old man.

Florida Highway Patrol identified the victim as Arthur Gilbert. The crash happened in the southbound lanes of the interstate near mile marker 109 around 4:15 a.m.

Gilbert was dropping his wife off at the airport and was on the way home when the crash happened. An acquaintance told WINK News that Gilbert and his wife were members at the Players Club and Spa.

Troopers say 24-year-old Genise Taylor was under the influence when she drove north in the southbound lanes of I-75. She crashed into two vehicles head-on.

The crash caused bumper-to-bumper traffic that stretched about five miles, all the way to the Bonita Beach Road exit. I-75 was shut down for nearly eight hours and reopened around noon.

Florida Highway Patrol says this is still an active investigation.

Taylor is set to appear in court at 2 p.m.
