Driver accused of crashing at gas station while buying alcohol, faces DUI and hit-and-run charges

LEE COUNTY, Fla. —

A Lee County man was arrested after being accused of a DUI hit-and-run at a gas station on Monday.

According to the Lee County Sheriff's Office arrest report, deputies were called to the Circle K gas station on Orange River Boulevard at around 12:34 a.m.

Deputies spoke with the victim, who said he was filling his gas tank at a pump when a truck pulled into the parking lot and tried to squeeze by his vehicle. However, the truck was unsuccessful and hit the bumper of the victim's vehicle, causing it to bend.

The victim said the occupants of the truck entered the store, purchased alcohol, and then left.

Deputies then responded to the home of the suspected driver of the truck, identified as Walfred Martinez Caravantes, 36, the report said.

Deputies questioned Martinez Caravantes about the crash, and noticed he had glossy eyes, slurred speech and a strong odor of alcohol, the report said.

Deputies then had Martinez Caravantes participate in field sobriety tests, according to the report. Martinez Caravantes failed the tests.

Deputies conducted a breathalyzer exam on Martinez Caravantes, which revealed he had a BAC of 0.23.

Martinez Caravantes was arrested and faces charges of hit-and-run, DUI and DUI damage to property.
