Matlacha celebrates Little Pine Island Bridge reconstruction project's progress

MATLACHA, Fla. —

Work on reconstructing the Little Pine Island Bridge is wrapping up.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at the Matlacha Community Park on Tuesday morning to celebrate Matlacha's 100th anniversary and the completion of the Little Pine Island Bridge's reconstruction.

The $65 million project began three years ago after Hurricane Ian moved through the area. Officials said the project made the bridge stronger to withstand storm surges, and crews drilled 65 feet and installed a new concrete cap.

According to the Florida Department of Transportation, crews will remain on site to complete final items and minor finishing tasks.
