MATLACHA, Fla. (WINK) — A community that's endured three hurricanes in four years celebrated the reopening of its gathering spot Tuesday.
The community center at the Matlacha Community Park has been closed for three and a half years, forcing groups like the island's civic association to find alternative meeting spaces.
The ribbon cutting comes as the island also celebrates the completion of repairs to the Little Pine Island Bridge.
The vibrant island has weathered significant storms, starting with Hurricane Ian in 2022.
"I believe in the 100-year history of Matlacha, that was absolutely one of the toughest days in the history of Matlacha," said Lee County Commissioner Brian Hamman.
Tuesday's celebration of the community center's reopening encapsulates the island's resilience.
"The community is very excited to have something like this available for us to meet and hold our events again," said Carol Scott, president of the Matlacha Civic Association.
Scott said the civic association has held meetings at the Blue Dog, located next door to the community center, since Ian forced the center to close.
John Lynch, owner of Blue Dog Bar and Grill, said the reopening marks another step forward for the island.
"We've come a long way. We got a long ways to go, but we have come a long way," Lynch said.
The Florida Department of Transportation finished repairs on the Little Pine Island Bridge, which Lee County says made it wider and safer.
"Having the bridge opened up, easing up traffic congestion. More businesses open, more residents coming back. It's, it's all just a really good combination for the future," Lynch said.
Matlacha is also celebrating its centennial birthday this year. Business owners said they are open and ready to serve customers.
