North Port man sentenced to life in prison after killing roommate in 2023

A North Port man has been sentenced to life in prison after the 2023 killing of his roommate.

On Tuesday, the State Attorney’s Office announced that Darryl Dye has been found guilty of second-degree murder for the August 7, 2023, killing of his roommate, 57-year-old Kim Szymaszek.

He was sentenced to life in prison.

This case began when officers responded to a call from Dye reporting that Szymaszek was dead.

When they arrived, they found a violent scene. An investigation determined Szymaszek sustained multiple gunshot wounds to her head and neck. 

North Port Police Department detectives, the State Attorney’s Office and the FDLE uncovered critical evidence that led to this conviction.
