Cape Coral city leaders are looking to install a traffic light at the intersection of Chiquita Boulevard and Embers Parkway to enhance safety and traffic flow, with the project estimated to cost $1.8 million.
At the intersection, traffic can become hectic, especially with Mariner Middle and High Schools nearby. The four-way intersection currently lacks traffic lights, leading to dangerous situations and crashes, such as one that occurred this morning.
Yerandy Dopico, who lives off of Chiquita Boulevard, said, "Yeah, I see accidents. I see people running through it without any disregard. A traffic light will absolutely help for sure."
The city has noted that the intersection has become busier over time, and a signal could help improve both safety and traffic flow. The project includes extra funds for any unexpected costs, and the city plans to use outside experts to ensure the design and construction meet safety standards.
This initiative is part of a larger plan by the city to make driving safer and less of a headache for residents.
Last month, the city approved the installation of another traffic light at the Chiquita Boulevard and Tropicana Parkway intersection.
If the project moves forward today, construction is expected to take about eight months to complete. The meeting to discuss the project will begin at 4 p.m.
