NAPLES, Fla. (WINK)— A new community event is bringing the heat this weekend, all for a good cause.
The first annual chili cook-off is set for this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The Mini Bar, located at The District in Naples, is featuring seven teams of first responders going head-to-head for a $1,000 cash prize.
Admission is $15, with proceeds benefiting local first responders.
Owner Jessica Lee say the event is designed to bring the community together in a laid-back, backyard barbecue atmosphere that’s fun for all ages.
“We’re stepping out of winter and into our summer vibe,” organizers said. “This is an all-American backyard BBQ and it’s kid-friendly.”
In addition to the chili competition, attendees can enjoy live music, balloon art and a variety of family-friendly activities. Kids will be treated to free ice cream, while guests can also meet adoptable rescue puppies on-site.
Raffle prizes add to the excitement, including diamond earrings and a one-of-a-kind martini glass signed by CMGA Jude Judy, custom made specifically for the event.
For those looking to pair their chili with a drink, themed Tito’s specials like peach iced tea will be available, adding to the casual, summer-style vibe.
The Mini Bar, which is hosting the event, says giving back to the community is a key part of its mission.
“We like to make ourselves different by being a place that can host community events,” said Lee. “Why not do things for a good cause? The Mini Bar is a great place to host it.”
Chef Jacob Pepponi will also be showcasing the venue’s new smoker, serving up barbecue favorites including ribs, pulled pork, smoked wings, burgers and hot dogs.
As for the chili competitors, Pepponi has some advice: keep it simple.
“Stick to your base ingredient and focus on your beef,” he said. “That can put you ahead. I prefer a 75/25 beef blend.”
The competition will be judged by a panel of three judges, with an additional “fan favorite” winner chosen by attendees.
Organizers say the event is all about community, connection and celebrating the people who serve.
“It’s a feel-good, family-friendly way to spend a Saturday supporting local heroes.”
All that’s left to do is grab a spoon, bring your appetite and get ready to taste your way through a Saturday that gives back to those who serve.
