FGCU Give Day returns with 24-hour push to support athletics and student programs

LEE COUNTY, Fla. (WINK) — FGCU’s Give Day returned Wednesday with a 24-hour fundraising push aimed at supporting student programs across campus, including Eagle athletics. Dozens of university groups set up on the library lawn as the school encouraged donors to give before the campaign ends at noon Thursday.

University officials said 84 support areas across FGCU are part of this year’s effort, ranging from athletics teams to service-learning programs and academic colleges. About half of those groups were represented on the library lawn, where students could visit tents, learn about each program and take part in activities throughout the day.

“It’s the FGCU Foundation celebration of philanthropy,” said Vince Modarelli, director of annual and leadership giving. He told WINK News the event is designed not only to raise money, but also to teach students how philanthropy supports their experience on campus.

For athletics, the fundraiser gives the department a chance to bring in added support for the everyday costs that come with competing at the Division I level. Athletic director Colin Hargis said those donations can help cover needs such as recruiting, travel, nutrition and equipment for FGCU’s 270 student-athletes across 15 Division I programs.

“Our mission here is to develop transformative leaders to be champions in the classroom and competition in the community,” Hargis said. “But it takes championship resources to support our student athletes.”

Hargis said the athletics department raised about $150,000 during last year’s Give Day and hopes to top that total this year. He said the concentrated 24-hour campaign gives coaches and supporters a specific window to rally fans, donors, alumni and the broader Southwest Florida community.

Modarelli said the event has grown in its second year on the library lawn. Last year, about nine support areas participated there, compared with more than 40 this year.

Give Day runs until noon on Thursday. Hargis said donations made during the campaign help provide resources that allow student-athletes, and FGCU students more broadly, to thrive on campus.
