Neighbors gathered on the sidewalk of US-41 at Daniels Parkway Saturday morning to attend one of the thousands of "No Kings" protests organized across the country to protest the administration of President Donald Trump.
Protesters gathered along the highway starting at 10 a.m. with signs, coolers and chairs until the event ended at around 12 p.m.
People driving along the highway held up their own signs and used their horns.
The Lee County Sheriff's Office told Gulf Coast News ahead of the protest that they were aware of the protests happening and that deputies would be monitoring.
Sources on the ground reported a peaceful event with no visible law enforcement presence. Sources also say that there were some pro-Trump supporters in attendance.
According to the organization's website, No Kings is an event and protest held to remind the nation that America has "no kings." This is the third series of nationwide protests held since Trump took office in January.
Lee County Democratic Chairman Jim Rosinus told Gulf Coast News that he expected around 10,000 protesters in Lee County alone ahead of the protest. He said that frustration was a main motivator in local movements for organizing.
"I think it's frustration with the economy. It's frustration with the policies that even the Republicans thought they were promised," Rosinus said.
