Punta Gorda honors Vietnam War veterans with new memorial addition

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. —

The Vietnam Wall of Southwest Florida stands tall, honoring more than 58,000 men and women who gave their lives during the Vietnam War.

For many, it’s more than just a wall; it’s a powerful reminder of sacrifice, service, and stories that should never be forgotten. This memorial is not just about looking back but also about ensuring future generations understand the weight of those turbulent times.

"Obviously, those that gave all and, obviously, there are many that gave some. So it is very important for us to come together and honor all branches of service. This is a fabulous day to do it. Rain does not stop for war, and so we do not stop honoring our veterans," said Shelley Addessi of Detachment 756 Charlotte County.

After six years in the making, the city has approved a new addition, an iconic symbol of the Vietnam War: a Huey helicopter.

"There's one word that resonates with every single Vietnam veteran out there. And that is the Huey. That was a lifesaver for many. The sounds of those rotors coming in meant that they had help coming in to either help get them out or help take wounded out. So it's very, very important addition," Addessi said.

That helicopter is being refurbished in LaBelle. The project still needs final design approval, along with fundraising efforts to not only build the display but also maintain it for years to come.

"And I think more importantly, it's going to be a great educational tool for our local youth so that they can learn about the sacrifices that have gone on before them that pave the path forward," Addessi said.

By combining the wall and the Huey, leaders hope to create an immersive experience that honors those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
