Safety steps for parents concerned about child predators

SOUTHWEST FLORIDA, (WINK) — Parents who suspect a sexual offender may be near their child should take immediate steps to investigate their concerns.

If you think something may be wrong, check into it. You don't want to call someone out in public without some facts, but there are things you can do.

Parents should watch for warning signs in their children, including nightmares, mood swings, fear of certain people or places and any physical signs.

Once these indicators are noticed, several investigative steps can be taken.

Experts recommend checking the sex offender database and reporting suspicious activity to law enforcement. This includes unusual watching of children or trying to interact with kids out of context or role.

If your child is online, check for any threats or meetup contact or any images being sent. Document everything, including times, dates and descriptions.

Parents should have a safety plan so their child is not alone with any individual they are concerned about. If worried, let the police confront the person rather than doing it yourself, as it could get out of hand.

While the topic is scary, don't live your life in a panic mode. Be aware and communicate with your child; that's the most important thing.
