Evangelical Christian School hires new director of boys basketball

FORT MYERS, Fla. (WINK)— Evangelical Christian School has named a new director of the boys' basketball team. 

On Tuesday, ECS announced the hiring of a new coach, David Westberry.

Westberry, a Southwest Florida native and Fort Myers High School standout, played collegiate basketball at Warner University. His coaching experience includes work at the collegiate level and years of player development with The National Basketball Academy, where he worked alongside the Indiana Pacers youth programs and led camps both nationally and internationally.

For the past seven years, Westberry has been a teacher and Middle School Athletic Director at the school.

"I'm excited for this opportunity and ready to get to work both on the court and in our faith," Westberry said. "I'm committed to developing young men who compete with excellence, integrity, and purpose."

The announcement marks his transition into leading the school's boys basketball program.

"We are excited to have Coach Westberry leading our boys basketball program," Athletic Director Chris Harris said. "We are confident he will lead our athletes in a Godly way, both on and off the court. We look forward to the future of ECS basketball under his leadership."

This recent hiring comes from the arrest and firing of the school’s former coach, who is accused of sexual misconduct with a student.

Former coach Rial Jackson Jones Jr. stands accused of making sexual advances on a student. This firing occurred earlier in March.

Jones worked as a substitute teacher and coach at the school.

The allegations were reported to the Lee County Sheriff's Office after a student notified a teacher that Jones and an 18-year-old student had likely been seeing one another since December, according to the warrant.
