The effects of the Iran War are being felt at gas pumps across the United States, with the average national price for gas now more than $4 per gallon.
At a Circle K along Winkler Avenue and Veronica Shoemaker in Fort Myers, the price for unleaded gas is $4.29 per gallon, while diesel is at $5.89 per gallon. According to GasBuddy, regular gas has increased by more than a dollar per gallon, and diesel has risen by more than $1.70 since the start of the Iran war. Experts are calling this one of the biggest supply shocks in history.
Across the Gulf Coast, all local counties are above the national average, with Collier County seeing the highest prices at $4.23 per gallon. Hendry County has the cheapest gas at $4.05 per gallon.
In Fort Myers, some of the best gas prices, according to GasBuddy, include Murphy USA on Del Prado in Cape Coral and Six Mile Cypress at $3.89 per gallon. Both 7-Elevens along Colonial are also at $3.89 per gallon. Mobil and 7-Eleven along 41 are at $3.93 per gallon, while Pilot, Marathon, and another 7-Eleven along Enterprise Parkway are at $3.95 per gallon. Some of these prices have not been updated in more than 12 hours.
This comes as a U.S. panel is meeting today to consider allowing oil and gas drilling in the Gulf, despite protections for endangered species. This move is backed by the Trump administration, but critics warn it could harm marine life, including a rare whale species.
