Child dies after drowning at Port Charlotte home, investigation underway

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (WINK)—The Charlotte County Sheriff's Office and Fire & EMS responded to a drowning involving a juvenile at a home in Port Charlotte.

According to Fire & EMS, the drowning report was made at a home located on Conreid Drive at approximately 11:15 a.m. on Tuesday.

Upon arrival, crews found CPR already in progress and immediately began advanced life-saving measures; however, the child did not survive.

Due to HIPAA and patient privacy laws, Charlotte County Fire & EMS cannot release any additional patient information.

Forensic science vehicles and yellow tape remained at the scene hours after the initial response. Earlier, neighbors reported seeing fire engines, several deputy vehicles, and emergency response teams outside the home.

One neighbor who spoke to WINK News off-camera said he saw emergency responders giving CPR to a child. Neighbors said the home is rented out as an Airbnb, so they did not recognize the boy or his family.

"I'm sure the mother and father's worst nightmare," said Karen Verber, a neighbor. "Very sorry to hear it for everyone involved. I'm sorry for the family, and I'm sure for the owner of the Airbnb, it is a headache and a tragedy."

Neighbors said they are heartbroken over the incident. The Charlotte County Sheriff's Office has not released additional information about the medical emergency or the condition of those involved.
