SOUTHWEST FLORIDA, (WINK) — This is no April Fools’ joke, a "Pink Moon" is rising tonight. While Artemis II is set to launch, April's full moon will be setting up a show of its own in the night sky.
Despite the name, unfortunately the Pink Moon won’t actually appear pink. Instead, you can expect a warm, golden glow as it rises.
So why call it the Pink Moon? The name comes from a springtime wildflower, Phlox subulate, also known as creeping phlox or moss phlox, that blooms in bright pink shades this time of year.
You won’t have to wait long to catch it. Moonrise is at 7:36 p.m. ET, so look to the eastern sky just after sunset. The moon will reach its peak brightness at 10:12 p.m. ET. With partly cloudy conditions in the forecast this evening, many of us here in SWFL should be able to get a great view of it!
This full moon is also known as the Paschal Moon, which is used to determine the date of Easter each year.
Even though the moon won’t actually be pink, tonight still offers many reasons to keep an eye to the sky. Send in your photos to us here at The Weather Authority, would love to show them off!
