Collier County confirms 2 more measles cases, total nears 110 in Southwest Florida

COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. —

Two more measles cases were reported in Collier County in the latest update from the Florida Department of Health, bringing Southwest Florida's total cases close to 110.

According to the update from F-DOH, which tracked measles cases through March 28, two more cases have been reported in Collier County.

This brings the total number of cases in Collier County to 106. Lee County did not gain any more cases and remains with three reported cases.

The largest number of cases in Collier County is being reported in the age groups of 15-19 (50) and 20-24 (41).

What are the symptoms of measles?

Measles is spread through the air by breathing, coughing, or sneezing. It can be transmitted four days before the rash becomes visible to four days after the rash appears. The symptoms of measles generally begin approximately eight to 14 days after a person is exposed to someone with measles, with a range of seven to 21 days.

Symptoms include:

• Fever
• Cough
• Runny nose
• Red, watery eyes
• Malaise

Typically followed in three to five days by:

• A rash that often starts on the face and neck, but can spread over the entire body.
• Tiny white spots with bluish-white centers are found inside the mouth.
