WINK Listens: Overgrown LaBelle ditch cleaned after flooding, fire hazard worries

LABELLE, Fla. (WINK)—After years of frustration over an overgrown ditch in LaBelle Woods, crews finally stepped in to clean it out and restore proper drainage.

A ditch behind Paul Thompson's home was left overgrown and clogged, causing standing water, mosquitos and flooding concerns. He brought the issue to WINK Listens.

At the time, LaBelle was already dealing with extreme drought, leaving those nearby worried the ditch posed a fire hazard. After WINK's first story, FDOT told WINK News the ditch would be added to a routine mowing schedule.

When WINK News returned to the area, only part of the job was done. The far end remained untouched, which could still lead to standing water.

WINK News followed up again, sending new video directly to FDOT. Days later, the crews returned to finish the job.

"Everybody in here was tickled to death. They wanted to shake my hand. They wanted my autograph," Thompson said. "I want to thank WINK, and I want to thank Lauren for getting something done. I appreciate it."
