Fort Myers City Council tables demolition contract for City of Palms Park

FORT MYERS, Fla. —

The future of City of Palms Park remains uncertain as Fort Myers leaders delay a decision on whether to demolish the long-vacant stadium, leaving residents wondering what comes next.

At a city council meeting Monday, officials discussed the cost of tearing down the stadium but ultimately voted to table the contract until their next meeting later this month. The delay comes as some leaders push to take more time before making a final decision.

“I just think we need to give this one more chance before we get rid of this thing,” said Councilmember Teresa Watkins Brown. “I think we need to go through it again.”

City of Palms Park, which once hosted Boston Red Sox spring training, has sat empty for years. For many in the community, the stadium is both a symbol of the city’s past and a source of frustration in its current state.

“They got a beautiful facility over there, right? Nobody knows what’s going on,” said Chris Polino, head coach of the Florida Warriors.

Others say the site has become an eyesore.

“There’s got to be something better they could do with this,” said Fort Myers resident George Bogdanovic. “It’s ridiculous.”

Despite its condition, city officials say parts of the structure could be preserved if demolition moves forward.

“We have identified a number of elements of the building that we have asked to be salvaged during the demolition process,” said city engineer Nicole Setzer.

The stadium last saw Major League use about 15 years ago, and since then, no permanent redevelopment plan has taken shape.

For some residents, the uncertainty is the biggest concern.

“It’s been an integral part of this community for quite some time, but I really wonder what’s going to replace it," said Polino.

The city council is expected to revisit the issue at its next meeting on April 20.
