Fort Myers mallet attack suspect caught after manhunt, set for deportation

FORT MYERS, Fla. (WINK)— The Department of Homeland Security says the suspect charged with brutally killing a Fort Myers mother is now facing deportation.

Documents say Rolbert Joachin repeatedly hit a woman in the head with a mallet at a Fort Myers gas station, killing her. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement along with the Fort Myers Police Department tracked down and arrest Joachin last week.

In a statement released, DHS says after entering the country in August 2022, a federal judge issued a final order of removal against Joachin. DHS says Joachin was granted temporary protection status which expired in 2024.

ICE has now put Joachin on an immigration hold. Regardless of the outcome of this case, DHS says he will be deported.

WINK News obtained the 30-page dispatch report which gives a play-by-play of the Fort Myers Police Department's response to the crime scene at the Fort Myers gas station and their search for Joachin. After reading over the report, it says Joachin was known to be homeless.

Officers searched several vacant homes for him during the manhunt and searched miles for him. Joachin is in court for what's called a pre-trial detention hearing.

That's when a judge will determine if Joachin will stay in jail with no bond or if any will be granted. WINK News will be there at 8 a.m.
