Cape Coral residents to see design plans for old golf course property

CAPE CORAL, Fla. (WINK)—City leaders are holding a meeting Wednesday about the old Cape Coral Golf Course and its future, sharing design concepts for the 175-acre property.

Two preliminary park design concepts will be shared at the meeting. People will get to see those designs and share their thoughts on how the City of Cape Coral is looking to transform the golf course.

The golf course has been unused since 2006. In 2016, D.R. Horton wanted to rezone the property so they could build homes, but that fell through. The city of Cape Coral purchased the 175-acre golf course in August 2024. Leaders are now ready to turn the wide-open canvas into a place that people want to visit.

Neighbors are excited for the property to get a facelift. They want to see more green space and parks in the area, not crowded housing.

"I do not want any more buildings. I don't want any more condos, houses, nothing like that. I want it to be a park with open space," Renee Lemieux of Cape Coral said. "We got enough buildings going on around here, enough commercial areas, enough mixed-use stuff. I just want a nice park."

Charlie Pease of Cape Coral suggested incorporating a golf course element into the design.

"It was a golf course for 50 plus years. Having a golf course element on part of that property, which is a Parks and Recreation element, I think would really make sure you have a win-win," Pease said.

Lemieux envisioned a space for all ages.

"The kids can ride their bikes. I think they should just make a whole gym area with a whole lot of stuff that different age groups can do," Lemieux said.

The public meeting is at 6 p.m. Wednesday at City Hall Council Chambers. Leaders will then take comments and work on a final master plan for the golf course, which will be presented sometime this spring.
