Fort Myers murder victim Nilufa Easman remembered by community

FORT MYERS, Fla. (WINK)—As the community continues to follow what will happen to Rolbert Joachin, community members can't forget Nilufa Easman.

Her family is grieving privately, but community members are speaking out about wanting justice for her. People around the world have been posting Easman's name online, wanting support and justice for her family.

A local business owner says empathy for Easman and her family goes beyond nationality.

"We should help their family. So not only Muslim, not only like immigrant, everybody can US citizen, Bangladeshi people, immigrant, non-immigrant, everybody should, uh, help the family," said Md Islam, owner of Food Mart.

Islam owns the convenience store Food Mart and works just 20 minutes from where Easman was killed. After the murder, Islam was surprised to learn that the mother of two shared a Bangladeshi background with him.

He is grateful Joachin was arrested quickly.

"Thanks to the US government, because after they happened, the police caught the guy pretty quickly. Really, thanks to the police department. We are so happy because," Islam said.

Homeland Security spoke about Easman at a news conference.

"This tragic event to this United States citizen who came here the right way six years ago, this Bangladeshi national who got her citizenship the right way.... It's senseless. It's a video you can never unwatch. Should not happen in this country," a Homeland Security official said.

Islam said he trusts the law will bring Easman's killer to justice. With the murder now making national headlines, Islam hopes other people will choose to get mental help if they need it.

"If you are mad, it is okay, but don't hit any, any human. You know, you know that's not good. You know, for your mistake. One family is gonna be harsh, you know, that's not good. So we have to like take care of ourselves, be cool and nice to each other," Islam said.

People continue to stop by D&D Mart to pay their respects. A memorial sits in front of the store.
