Vigil planned for bicyclist killed in Lehigh Acres hit-and-run

LEHIGH ACRES, Fla. —

Troopers are investigating a hit-and-run that killed bicyclist Ron Wilk last week on East Fifth Street in Lehigh Acres, as friends and family prepare to honor his memory with a vigil Friday night.

Lucy Lopez, a lifelong friend of Wilk, created a memorial at the site of the crash, near tire marks and spray-painted markers.

"I've known RJ since he was five. I've been friends with him and watched his sisters grow up, and they need the love and the support that they can get," Lopez said.

Lopez said she wanted to ensure Wilk is remembered.

"I just wanted them to know that he's not forgotten here," Lopez said.

Troopers are working to determine whether one or two vehicles were involved in the deadly hit-and-run. A witness reported seeing two cars at the scene, including a red SUV. Investigators have since located the SUV and, this week, found a blue Toyota in front of a home in Lehigh Acres. The Toyota reportedly has bumper repairs and missing hubcaps, matching a witness description.

Wilk’s sister, Megan Wilk, shared her thoughts on forgiveness.

"In my heart, I know I would forgive them and they're forgiven. You know, accidents do happen and I know it can be scary. A lot of things in life are scary, but we just have to do it, you know?" she said.

Friends of Wilk hope the discovery of both vehicles will lead investigators to the drivers.

"Even one single arrest, I'm sure, would put some family members at ease and make them more hopeful that he gets the justice he deserves," Lopez said.

Wilk’s friends plan to gather at the memorial Friday night for a vigil in his honor.
