FORT MYERS, Fla. (WINK) — Water experts are holding an event this morning to keep up with the state of Southwest Florida's water.
The Calusa Waterkeeper says the main presentation will look at how algal toxins may play a role in brain health. The discussion will go as far as examining how algal toxins relate to neurodegeneration and Alzheimer's disease.
The featured speaker is Dr. David Davis of the University of Miami Brain Endowment Bank. According to the event's flyer, his talk will focus on current research into algal toxins, harmful blooms and possible links to dementia, an issue that many families are familiar with in Southwest Florida.
The Calusa Waterkeeper also says the discussion will examine approaches to protect against exposure and neurotoxicity. The event is free and has limited space.
The event is happening on FSW's campus at Building U in Room 102 from 9:30 a.m. to noon. WINK News reporter Paul Dolan was there this morning.
"This morning's event may leave people looking at water a little differently," Dolan said. "While it's going to begin as a water quality conversation, it could end up feeling much more personal for a lot of people attending."
Harmful algal blooms hurt many aspects of Southwest Florida's economy when they invade the water.
