A 33-year-old man from Alva was injured in a fatal crash on Interstate 75 in Sarasota County early Wednesday morning, according to troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol.
FHP said in a press release that the crash happened at 12:08 a.m. in the northbound right lane near mile marker 178.
A pickup truck towing a trailer loaded with sod was stopped in the northbound right lane of Interstate 75 near mile marker 178.
The release says the driver of the pickup truck, a 34-year-old woman from New Port Richey, and two passengers, including a 33-year-old man from Alva and a 19-year-old man from Tampa, exited the truck to check on a possible trailer tire issue.
The right front of a semitruck, driven by a 61-year-old man, collided with the left side of the trailer and the left side of the pickup truck. The man sustained minor injuries, FHP says.
The woman from New Port Richey was pronounced dead at the scene, FHP says. The man from Tampa and the man from Alva sustained minor injuries and were transported to an area hospital.
The crash remains under investigation.
