Mechanical issue grounds medical helicopter on Useppa Island, second aircraft called in

FORT MYERS, Fla. —

A second medical helicopter had to be called in after the first medical helicopter became grounded on Useppa Island early Sunday morning.

According to Useppa Island Fire Rescue on Facebook, Lee County EMS was assisting with a medical call when a minor mechanical issue caused their aircraft to become grounded. Crews said that a second medical helicopter from a neighboring county was called in to complete the patient transport.

Crews say that operations continued into the early morning hours, and that the aircraft will remain at the landing zone until it is deemed safe to return to service at Page Field.
